The Saurians

Salamanders
The leaders of the Saurian race. These are powerful elemental beings who have the exceptional ability to conjure elemental fire (levin or “lightning”). According to some legends, these were the beings who taught the ancestors of Wights (Boreans, Elves, Dwarves, and the like) how to make fire.

Monitors / Varanites
The Monitors make up the main military and policing forces of the Saurian race. They have a typical varanid face not unlike a Komodo dragon, but for a large, rounded cranium similar to that of a crow or even a human. Pictured here is a “plain” Monitor; most had some sort of elaboration adorning them, such as: various horns, combs, crests, antlers, dorsal spines, or even exaggerated dewlaps and/or jowels/waddles. Monitors also came in a wide variety of colors, from dull earth-tones to vibrant patterns of stripes and spots. While it may be tempting to infer that the different colors and patterns were indicative of racial groups, the Saurians had no such concept of race; though nearly every population had a color and pattern that was marginally more common than the others, no population was lacking in diversity.

Monitors are social beings, with a strong sense of discipline ever-restraining the violent passions of their reptilian brain. As emotionally intense entities, Monitors have a deep sense of aesthetics and tend toward hedonism. Monitors prefer to listen to and produce rhythmic, low-pitch music with strong bass, especially drums. Percussion instruments more generally tend to be favored over other types. They enjoy strong, meaty smells and flavors, and they are especially fond of the smells of rotten flesh and of sweet fruit.

Varanite family groups tend to be temporary. Mating among Varanites take the form of serial monogamy, with an extra emphasis on the word serial: males and females pair up to raise a clutch of young, but as soon as the young are able to handle themselves within their society (i.e., show responsibility and the ability to stand up for themselves against bullies), and are also able to demonstrate sufficient survival skills for enduring the wilds, the parents part ways and pair with other individuals. Occasionally, a single pair grow so fond of one another that they practice a less-extremely-serial, more human-like form of serial monogamy, and will only mate with one another until one of the pair dies; this is somewhat frowned upon in Monitor society, as it restricts genetic diversity, but there is no official social sanctioning that prohibits it.
